Happy Spring

Spring came to the mountainside where I love to roam and made it pinkish for a stretch. Lovely it was!

As was the park...

And now it's mid-spring and I think Japan should lay claim to dogwood season somehow. They're everywhere and just BEAUTIFUL!
Don't you think?

Since I have the luxury of having a long vacation during Japan's "Golden Week" I decided to take a nice long run, snap some photos of the other lovelies of the season and actually sit down to write a short blog post. Actually...all you get is some floral photos, but pictures speak louder than words sometimes. Enjoy...

Happy Spring! Next floral season to look forward to comes with rainy season, but we take it cause it brings amazing hydrangeas. Perhaps I'll post again then. :D Sorry it had been so long.

皆様、新年あけましておめでとうございます！

私達スクールも今日からクラスが始まりますが、
皆様、年末年始はいかがお過ごしでしたでしょうか？
帰省あるいは旅行、またはお家でゆっくり。。。？

私達はといえば、リサの両親に会うためお出かけしていましたが、
その件についてはまた次回以降にアップしていきたいと思います。

今年も一年新たな気持ちで２人力を合わせて頑張っていきたいと思います。
どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

２０１１年も皆様にとって良い一年となりますように！

Got Pho?

We got pho, fresh spring rolls, and that yummy leaf right there next to the spoon...couldn't get enough of that. (Not a real food blogger here, so forgive the fact that I'm not giving you real names for herbs here.)

We took a short trip to Vietnam last month and packed in as much food wrapping, noodle slurping and beer sipping as we could. And what made the trip extra special was getting to see friends..well, actually a family whose mother and two adorable kids came for English lessons before moving to Vietnam to join the father who had been transferred there for work.

We spent the day together going sight-seeing at the Mekong River Delta then back to Ho Chi Minh for dinner. We cruised around on a small boat with a lovely Vietnamese woman guiding us, imparting interesting facts in both English and Japanese with a brilliant, sincere smile. How they packed in a coconut candy factory, a bee farm, a fruit orchard, sit-down lunch, and a row boat ride into one afternoon, I'll never know. Our friends daughter entertained us on our boat with some singing and general cuteness that only a 7 year old can muster, the locals on the riverside were even cheering for her.

Mashi got to try the hat as we gathered round and let the kids pose with fruit. It was like spending a day with my own niece and nephew since they're about the same age.

We had such a great day together. (We miss you in Takatsuki, but glad you're so happy with your new life in Vietnam.)

Other than that day, we spent the other time in HCMC checking out some museums and sightseeing spots and trying to cross roads like this.

It was a nice, but short, little adventure.

Halloween Festival 2010 !

昨日の10月24日（日）はハロウィンフェスティバルでした。

まずは朝8時ごろに会場となる河川敷の場所取りに。
タープやブルーシートを持って走りまわりました。
前日ぐらいからお天気のほうがあやしくなりましたが、
当日朝は曇り。
それでも結構な人が同じように場所取りなどに来ていて
なんとか私たちも無事スペースを確保し、まずはほっと。。。

直ぐにスクールに戻り荷物の確認、コスチュームのメイクアップ、
車への積み込みをし会場に向けて再び出発。

イベント当日の担当・アクティビティーをプリントし
流れをいつでも確認できるように。。。

各アクティビティーごとに仕分けてみました。
会場に到着した時には既に準備を手伝って頂けるご父兄の姿も。
荷物運び・飾り付けなどの準備を1時間以上ありがとうございましたm(_ _)m

11時開場。

皆さまのおかげで今年もHalloween Festival乗り切れましたー！

ちなみに何かをなくしたり忘れた時に

たまに、

みたいな感じで表記しているところもありますが、

これを見るとなるほど！と思いますよね～。。。

今夏の異常な暑さも去り、ここのところ涼しくなったな～
と思ったらもう10月。

ハロウィンの季節です。

教室もハロウィンバージョン、飾り付けです。

子供たちの反応も上々。
クラスに入ってきたときのコメントや一言が
何気に嬉しいものです (^-^)

今月の後半にはHalloween Festival。

English Square Gourmet Club Starts Next Month.

毎年夏に口からでること・・・

“今年の夏は本当に暑いですね～！！！”

皆さんほぼ口癖のようになっていますが、
今年は、本当のほんとうに！格別に”！暑い夏でしたね。
ただやっと９月の中頃になって過ごしやすくなってきました。
朝晩が楽になりましたよね。。。

ところで今日は大人の生徒さまへのイベント告知です(o^∀^o)

以前からずっ～と考えていました、食事会

第１回を開催することとなりました。
また今回は食事の前に映画観賞会（映画館にて）も合わせて開催します。

School Resumes

子供たちのみんなー！夏休み楽しんでいますか～？！

今日１７日は海外旅行からの帰国ラッシュだそうですが、
皆さんはどこかに行きましたか？？？

学校の夏休みはまだしばらく続きますが、
私たちスクールの夏休みは昨日で終わり・・・
今日からクラス再開です！

まだまだ暑い日が続きますが、
元気に！パワー全開！でクラス始めますっ！(^O^)

Summer Break!

申し訳ありませんm(_ _)m
お久しぶりの更新になってしまいました。。。

ここ最近は梅雨が明けたと思ったらとんでもなく暑い毎日が続いていますね！
クラスルームはクーラーが入っていますが、子供たちの熱気で室温急上昇です(^_^;)
子供たちはクラスに入ってくるとまずは宿題チェックの為、
テキストを僕に渡すのですが、そのテキストの熱いこと熱いこと！
いかに外が暑いか実感する瞬間です・・・

でもそんな子供たちもここ１～２週間はどんどん日焼けしてきていて
“あつい～！あつい～！！！”と言いつつも
とても元気です(＾＾)

もうほとんどの学校では夏休みに入ったようですが、
そんな子供たちにも負けずにお母さま方、
頑張ってください！

そんな私たちも明日から夏休みです。
しばらくはみなさんともお会いできませんが、
またお休み明けに元気にお会いしましょう！

It's getting Hot or ???

ここのところ寒かったり、暑かったり。。。
日によってまちまちで、毎日着る服に悩んでしまいますね。

毎年クラスルームのクーラーが始動し始めるのが、
ゴールデンウィーク前後。
今年もやはりゴールデンウィーク明けの５月６日に
今年１回目のエアコンスイッチオンです。

特に子供たちのクラスが集中する夕方は西日が強く、
また何といってもその子供たちの熱気で部屋の温度は急上昇！(^O^)

本当にびっくりするぐらい暑くなります。
それからは毎日夕方はエアコンはいっています。
今日は・・・少しお天気が悪いので使わないかもです。

また今日はプランターの植え替えです。
冬用のお花さんが弱くなってきたのと
あとアブラムシさんが大量発生してきた為。

ちょっとシンプルに。

どうなるか楽しみです。

立派になるまで、１ヶ月・・・いや、もう少しほどお待ちくださいね(＾＾)

Golden Week 2010!

皆様、このゴールデンウィークはいかがでしたか？
今年はお天気にも恵まれ、お出かけされた方も多いでしょうね！

私たちはというと、
毎年の恒例、親戚を訪ねての北海道。
今回は僕の母親も含めた３人で。。。

札幌で親戚の叔母様たちと合流後、
定山渓温泉へ。

定山渓温泉は、札幌市内から車で・・・
１時間ぐらいの温泉街です。

泊まりは、章月グランドホテル。

１年ぶりに叔母様たちとゆっくりです。

この宿のいいところは↑のようなラウンジがあり、
宿泊者は無料で利用できました。

そこではこの宿の売り？
蜂蜜バーやコーヒー・お茶などの飲み物があり
自由に飲食できました。

２０種類ぐらいの蜂蜜。
これをクラッカーやヨーグルトにかけて食べます。

何気にこういうサービス・空間があるのはポイントたかいです。
おかげさまでゆっくりと過ごすことが出来ました！

次の日はそこから車で南に下り着いた場所は
あの・・・

The Windsor Hotel 洞爺

ただし・・・泊まっていません！

残念ながらこんな高いところ泊まること出来ません！(T_T)

ちょっとミーハーで、一度来てみたかったのですが、
やはりすごいホテルでした。
なにがすごいって！ホテル自体も超豪華ですが、
そのロケーション！
山の上に、まさにお殿様が天下を見下ろすように立地、
北に洞爺湖、南に海。
すばらしい景色です。

やっぱりウィンザーホテル洞爺といえば

このホテルのことはこれぐらいにして・・・

私たち平民は麓のほうにある普通の宿にチェックイン。

夕方洞爺湖畔をリサはジョギング、

僕は散歩(^_^;)をしましたが、

気持ちが洗われるようなとても気持ちの良い時間を過ごせました。

次の日は最終目的地、函館に向かいます。

３歳ぐらいから毎年のように北海道には行っていますが、

なんと！函館は初めて！

とても楽しみです(＾＾)

函館駅。

赤レンガ倉庫なども行ったのですが、

写真を撮り忘れ・・・

ゴールデンウィークということもあり

たくさんの人出でした。

晩御飯を何処で食べようかな～と思っていたところ、

タクシーの運転手さん曰く、

“赤レンガ倉庫のあたりは高いばっかりで

新鮮じゃないよ～。”とのこと。

で、その運転手さんのお勧めの

海光房さんへ。

なるほどすごい人気です。

次から次へとお客さんが来て、

僕たちも３～４０分ぐらい待ちました。

雰囲気も料理も良かったです！

その後はこれも定番、

函館山からの夜景です。

これで今回の旅も終わり。

次の日は函館空港から・・・

やっぱりあの関空へと帰りました。

北海道は以上です(^-^)

で、ちょっと続きがあります。

関空に着いた日は、あの高槻Jazz Streetの日！

そのまま急いで家に帰り夜からは↓

ちなみに歌っている女性はジャマイカ人のお友達“N”。

一緒にJazz Streetに行っていたのですが、

飛び入りで歌っていました！(^O^)

さすが雰囲気でますね～！

熱唱お疲れ様ですー。

かんぱーい！！！

Spring!

またまた更新までの時間があいてしまいましたm(_ _)m

毎年２月ぐらいから、３月・４月と時間的にも気持ち的にも
いっぱいいっぱいになってしまいます。
↑言い訳です・・・

今年も毎年３月ぐらいにおこなっている参観日・保護者面談会、
その他、新年度のスケジュール調整などなどが一段落つき、
４月の初めぐらいには、落ち着くかなーと思っていましたが、
今４月の終わりでもちょっとまだ頭の中がバタバタとしています。

でもちょっと落ち着いたかな。。。

話は変わりますが、この間冬休みが終った！と思っていると
もう早速今週の終わりぐらいからはゴールデンウィークですね。

皆様旅行などの計画を立ててますでしょうか？
最近はこの不景気が幸いしてか、
場所や行き方によっては値段もお手ごろ？
のところもあるようで賢く余暇を楽しみたいものですね！

この高槻では毎年、Jazz Streetなるその名のとおり
Jazzのイベント、街がJazz一色になるイベントがありますね。
僕たちもこのお得に楽しめるイベントに毎年行っています。
高槻でゴールデンウィークを過ごされる方は、
街のどこかでお会いしましょう！(＾＾)

Cheery Cherries in Bloom over here!

I haven't blogged since last year (...sorry!) but the beautiful cherries have inspired me.

The day of our spring bbq was perfect, except perhaps for the crowds, but it amazes me how I've gotten used to that over the years. We cooked, ate, took a stroll up through the woods to a nice waterfall and back down under the pink covering with blue sky shining through. Could not have asked for a nicer day. The pictures don't even do it justice, but here are a few...

I can't resist a food note here... Besides the yummy beef and piles of vegetables, we always love grilled "age" (fried tofu blocks) topped with grated ginger, sliced green onions and soy sauce. Our other two favorites are grilled mountain potatoes with butter & salt, wrapped in shiso leaves, and grilled bamboo topped with Japanese pepper leaves. Oh my, did we chow!

After getting more that a bit full, we took a much needed walk. The mountain side was covered with blooming cherry trees and the sound of the river from the ravine provided perfect background music.

昨日の月曜日は、近所にある

のびてゆく幼稚園さん

にお呼び頂き“英語でリトミック”を行ってきました。

立派な園舎です。

１つ目が始まりましたー！

休憩中？準備中！

２つ目です。

今までは外からしか見たことがなかったのですが、

中に入ってみると思った以上に広く、

とてもいい感じの幼稚園でした。

子供たちもとても元気に楽しそうにしていて

なんか懐かしい感じ？

幼稚園の中に入ったのは・・・もしかすると

自分が幼稚園に行っていた何十年前かもしれません(^_^;)

そんなことを考えていると

ああ～、自分もこんなふうに無邪気な子供だったのかな～

とちょっとセンチメンタルというか、

とても不思議な？気持ちになれた１日でした。

Our Winter Break #4

Finally an English post!

It's been a while since I've blogged, so I figure I'd better get back to it and continue where Masashi left off. To recapture, he wrote about my parents' coming for their long anticipated visit to Japan the day after Christmas, our lovely three days together traveling to Shiga and then Awaji Island, and the unfortunate happening of my mother having to be hospitalized over New Year's. But, as you can see below, she made a nice, quick recovery and we were back on the vacation trail in no time.

We spent a nice day in Kyoto...

headed out of Takatsuki on the Hankyu train which took us right into the heart of Kyoto's shopping district

and the famous Nishiki Market

where we stopped for a casual lunch of "oden" topped with spicy mustard, grilled layers of fried tofu, grilled squid, and hot udon noodles with tempura. Hot, yummy and a far cry from hospital fare.
We then were picked up by our friend, Hiro, who just happens to be a Kyoto taxi driver working his way up to becoming a tour guide for foreign visitors. He drove us by the Chioin Gate, Yasaka and Heian Shrines, the Daimonji Festival site and we made two stops along the way

one at Sanjusangendo Temple which is famous for it's huge hall that houses 1001 carved buddhas on display. It was fascinating, though no photos were allowed inside. (You'll all have to come see for yourselves, or look here http://www.taleofgenji.org/sanjusangendo.html)

But Mashi did get this nice shot:

The other stop was to walk along "Nene-no-Michi" - the most popular walking area in Kyoto's Higashiyama area. We stopped at this small temple to make our first New Year's wishes.

We, as always, were lucky to have Mashi with us to handle the dinner arrangements. He got us a reservation at the last minute at his favorite restaurant in Kyoto, Manzara-Tei. The dish below is just what comes as an appetizer after you order a round of drinks.

After Hiro finished his taxi shift, he joined us briefly. His wife had already joined us after our taxi tour and was livening up the table, as always, with her bright smile, entertaining stories, and hearty reactions to my dad's jokes.

It was a nice ending to a fantastic Kyoto day.

Our Winter Break③

なぜか１人で飛行機に乗り込みバンコクへ。

１人で旅行すること自体特に何も感じませんが、
もともと４人で旅行する予定が急に１人になると
なんかこう・・・

ちょっと寂しい感覚が。。。

でも、まぁ大丈夫です！

とりあえずは経由地のクアラルンプールへ。

＠関空

今回お世話になるマレーシア航空さん。

バンコクの空港で僕の荷物がまだ着いていないアクシデントもありましたが、
反対に手ぶら状態でホテルまで行けるのと
その手続きをしていたら友人の飛行機の到着時間になったので
そのまま空港で合流、ホテルへ向かいました。

今回泊まった
Fraser Place Langsuan, Bangkok

ホテルだけは新たに予約を取り直しても
キャンセル料の分を考えると大差なかったので
そのまま。

１人で２ベッドルーム・・・
ベッドルーム２つとリビングルーム、それにキッチン。

広すぎです。

何をどこに置いたのかわからなくなりました(^_^;)

窓からの景色。

友人が泊まっているConradがちらりと見えます。

友人と僕。

彼は大学時代の友人で一緒によく勉強したり・・・
ではなく、
一緒によく遊んだ(^_^;)良き友です。

彼は仕事の関係上、いろいろなところに住んでいたのですが
現在はドバイに住んでいます。

今回はなんと１５～６年ぶり位の再会。
本当にうれしかったです！

ゴルフなんかもやってみたり
（ゴメンナサイ！リサ）

ご飯を食べたりお酒を飲んだり
（久しぶりにエイトボールなんかやったり）
あっという間に時間は過ぎて・・・

次回の再会をバンコク・ドバイ・日本のどこかで
と約束し、リサと両親の待っているお家に帰ります。

微妙な気持ちのままの旅行でしたが、

久しぶりの変わっていない友人に会え

とてもとても楽しい時間を過ごせました。

Our Winter Break②

前回までは両親が日本に来てから
温泉までを書きましたが、
その後・・・
ちょっとした出来事がありました。

というのは、リサのお母さんの調子が悪くなり
病院にいくことになりました。
ところが年末ということもありいくつかの病院を回ってやっと
見てもらったところ・・・

“はい、即入院です”

と。

絶句です(T_T)

といったことで年末から年始にかけては
お家と病院の往復を繰り返し、
気がついたら新しい年になっていた感じです。

またお正月からは皆でタイに行く予定に
なっていたのですが、それがぎりぎりまでわからず、
結局は出発前日の元旦に全てをキャンセル。
苦渋の決断でしたが、体にはかえられません。

ところがそこで１つ問題が・・・

実は僕の友人がわざわざ予定を合わせて
バンコクまで会いに来てくれることになっていました。

皆にも話したところ幸いにも
“行って来なさい！”
と言ってくれましたので、これも苦渋の決断、
帰ってくる日を早めて僕だけ行くことに決めました。

というわけでいろいろな手続きを済ませ
僕だけタイ、バンコクへ。

Classes Resume

今日から私たちEnglish Squareも
クラスが始まっています。

今のところお休みもなく皆さん元気に来てくれています。

明日からも久しぶりの子供たちや大人クラスの方たちの

Our Winter Break①

実は、12月のクリスマスパーティーが終わった次の日から

今日までリサの両親が遊びに来てました。

今頃両親は飛行機の中で・・・

食事が終ったころかでしょうか。。。

今回はいろいろとありましたが、

その後はリサが以前住んでいた甲賀へ。

相変わらずいつものように暖かく迎えていただき、

蒔きストーブでピザを焼いてくれたりなどなど。。。

いろいろとお世話になりました。

帰りにはお米30キロ！(^O^)と野菜などなど頂いてしまいました。

甲賀の皆様、いつも本当にありがとうございます。

リサの両親は日本は・・・

何度目でしょう、４～５回目ぐらいかな。

まずは懐かしいお顔を見れて良かったかな～。

話は少し飛びますが、

その次の日は、両親のリクエストにより

淡路島の洲本温泉に。

お宿は夢海游という旅館。

お部屋にて。

食事お風呂も良かったです(＾＾)

このあとちょっとした出来事が・・・

新年明けましておめでとうございます。

２０１０年ですね。。。
皆様よいお正月を過ごせましたでしょうか？？？
私たちはちょっと年末に色々とあり、
年が明けた実感が全くない年末・お正月でした。

ともあれ、お正月が明けてからは僕一人だけ出かけて
今1月６日の夜、マレーシアのクアラルンプール空港で日本に帰る為の乗り換え待ち中です。
一人であまりにも暇！なので簡単ですが更新です。
また後ほどゆっくりと更新しますのでよろしくお願いいたします。

今年も皆様にとって、また私たちにとっても
よい一年になることを願って新年のご挨拶とさせていただきます。

早くももう12月、師走ですね。

毎年書いているかもしれませんが、
最近の街は、ハロウィンにしてもクリスマスにしても
どんどんその飾りつけする時期が早くなっていると思いませんか？？？
11月末ぐらいからクリスマスツリーを飾っていたり・・・

欧米の人に言わせると
“おかしい”
らしいです(^_^;)

日本人の感覚でいうと、
１２月中頃から鏡餅やしめ縄を飾っているようなものでしょうか・・・
たぶん。

やっぱりクリスマスはクリスマス！
12月みたいです。

というわけで
12月に入ってからクリスマスツリー！
飾りました！

今回は昼間の写真。

んー、やっぱり夜のほうが雰囲気あるかな～。。。

Kansai ETJ Expo 2009

11月29日は、Kansai ETJ Expoでした。

いつものようにLisaは前日からお泊まりでお手伝い。
土曜日のクラスが終わってからすぐ会場となる
大阪上本町にある清風高校へ。

僕は当日だけ(^_^;)

行く途中心斎橋から難波まで歩いてみましたが、
御堂筋のイチョウがきれいな黄色に。

きれいでした。

いつもの会場。
閉会するちょっと前で人もまばら。。。

その後は後片付け、お金の計算などなど。

で、終了後近くの焼き鳥屋さんで打ち上げです～。

このexpo、英会話講師による英会話講師へのプレゼンテーションイベントですが、

いろいろな講師のスキルを得れる貴重な情報交換の場といったところでしょうか。

入場料は500円ですが、それにしてはたくさんのプレゼンテーションを見れますし

また英語教材の出版社の方たちから直にいろいろな教材の情報・アドバイスも得られます。

英語を教えている先生にとっては悪くないというか、結構お得なイベントだと思います。

それにしても↑に移っている皆さん、
無償のボランティアスタッフなのに毎年・毎年がんばります。
えらいですねー！！！
本当に、感心します！

Halloween Festival Fun

Here's what went down at Halloween Festival 2009. Very importantly, there was sunshine...whew! But more importantly, there many happy, costume-wearing, fired-up little festival-goers!

We're all set-up and ready to go..."Yay!!!" we cheered for sunshine, "Yay!" for candy, "Yay!" for games...for hamburgers, for pumkins and perhaps other things I could think of on the spot. "1..2..Yay!"
In our first game corner, my friend Chako got S ready for Ghost Bowling.
Yuka and his big sister, got J ready for the Monster Ring Toss.
Y kept his eyes closed for the ENTIRE round of "Pumpkin Face"
and opened them up nicely for the photo op afterwards...well, sortof. Don't you just love those smile dimples!

Challengers lined up at the Coin Drop Station, without realizing that the nun helping them out was really one of their teachers.
Meanwhile, our tireless volunteers got ready for the hamburger line. N's mom was amazing! She volunteered to help despite bringing three kids with her on her own - one, you can see, she has in her arms while still helping set up. You rock!! Thank you!
The burgers were ready, thanks to our grill master dads who also worked non-stop from morning to evening. And the crowds were ready. Let's eat!

We ended the festival with some jack-o-lantern carving. C's mom got an eye out...of the pumpkin that is.
I even got a chance to carve and enjoyed the memories of my own backyard pumpkin carving days with my family. We always had great holiday times including trick-or-treat nights every year in our neighborhood back home, long, long ago.
We ran out of time and volunteers and had to cut the smores from the schedule, but all in all, I think it was a fun day for our little English Square. Thanks for coming, everyone!

Announcing the results of the English Square Halloween Festival Costume Contest:

For the 2nd year in a row, the "Family Costume Prize" went to the "K-Clan", only half of whom are pictured here because Dad was busy grilling burgers for everyone, their daughter playing festival games. Three cheers to you for always getting decked-out and always bringing such life to our party! The Brother and Sister Prize went to the "M-siblings" who have come to our party every year, are always so well-behaved, join in every activity, and manage to stay smiling!
"N-chan" got the girl"s prize in a costume her grandmother made for her. Incidentally, the grandmother also made her cousin's costume, pictured here. Nice! and so cute!
And our youngest student, "R-kun", got the boy's prize as this adorable, young Peter Pan. (I wanted to give a beauty prize to his mom who is always impeccably gorgeous, but I think she was happy enough for her son.)

to our oldest group of "kid" students so cute as cats,
up to some parents who made it through a long day of fun in the sun (two of them surviving morning sickness). Moms are tough for sure! Thanks for coming everyone!

Our Annual Camping Trip

Every year either in the heat of August or, more recently as the weather cools down a bit, in mid-September, we find ourselves heading to the mountain side for a camping weekend with friends. What started out as a large group adventure several years ago:

has dwindled down to just us "die hards":

Luckily we had a nice, long four-day weekend and spent two leisurely days and nights by this river in Shiga Prefecture. The plan was to go and just sit around in our camp chairs, enjoy a casual read, take quiet walks along the river, etc. And although we actually did these things, it seems most of our time was spent setting up our campsite, getting ready for meals, reorganizing our campsite, going shopping for firewood and outdoorsing-it necessities, cleaning up after meals, covering our belongings in case of rain, complaining about the "noisy" campers who had the nerve to want to enjoy the outdoors the same time we did, then packing up our unbelievably full car loads of gear, etc. "Leisure" is sure a lot of work, I'd decided.

But we did have a wonderfully cozy campfire thanks to Mashi's continuous and meticulous care, nice chats with our good friends, and....our favorite barbequed delights:

lots of veggies, including my favorite..."yamaimo with shiso" (mountain potato with perilla leaves) all dolled up in butter and salt - simple and oh so good!

We also had a new-comer to our feast....mini potatoes skewered on rosemary stalks. Delish!

(We did have other members in our feasting not belonging to the potato clan, but they just didn't make the photo opps.)

Another summer over, another fall in the works. Our Halloween decorations are up and we're ready for our annual Halloween Festival on the 11th! Photos coming soon, we hope, as we keep our fingers crossed for nice weather.

Happy Birthday, dear Mo---mmy!! Happy Birthday to you!!

When my brother's family and I were all home in Michigan earlier this month, we decided to get in a little bit of an early celebration for my mother's birthday. It looked like this..

consult the beloved Martha Stewart Wedding book for a yummy recipe, double check ingredients and their availability - quite simply everything you'd expect in a cake, plus the magic of lemons -rummage through cupboards to find some appropriate cake pans, whip up some icing, set up a decorating assembly line for my niece and nephew's cute little fingers and ....VOILA!! instant birthday party!

The candles are lit...

and blown out by the birthday girl with help from her grandkids,

and enjoyed by all - I think mostly by Reed.

This was birthday time with the kids before we had hot-off-the-grill zucchini, sweet potatoes and salmon.

followed by a less sugar sprinkled adult cake decorated by Emilie with a big "L" for "Lila" written in blueberries.

We're thinking of you today, mom, and sorry we're not with you for your actual birthday. But, hope it's a good one!

Sweet Summer

"So, how was your summer vacation?" I always ask my students during our first class after the break. I listen to their stories and they usually ask me the same question. My answer this year was quite simple, "I just spent time with my family, saw my best friend and her family, and had a nice trip to Chicago." And although those were the best parts of my summer, upon cleaning out my wallet this morning, I discovered that I actually did quite a lot besides sitting in my parent's backyard sipping beer and eating yummy food.

So, first, for those interested, a few interesting places to visit if ever in western Michigan.

The day my brother and family arrived at the Grand Rapids Airport from Maine, we went to Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. My mother and I went early and enjoyed a guided tram tour of the amazing collection of outdoor sculpture - fantastic! When my niece and nephew joined us, we headed to the Children's Garden. A michigan summer off to a great start!

The next day we had a "Girls Day Out" and Grandmommy Lila, my sister-in-law, my niece and I headed down to Holland to watch Charlotte's Web performed at the Hope Summer Repertory Theater. Uniquely presented and magical! We adults enjoyed it as much as the kids around us.

The next day while the rest of the family headed to Holland to cheer on my brother in his long-course swimming pursuit... (He SWAM a 5k in just over 1 hour!! WOW!) my mother and I made a brief stop at our local art museum, where my mom volunteers as a docent. For such a relatively small town, Muskegon sure has a fantastic art museum.

Then we drove just minutes away to the bustling Muskegon Farmer's Market to fill our big wicker basket with juicy blueberries, cherries and peaches; ripe tomatoes, fresh picked corn, etc., etc. What a great season for fresh fruits and veggies!

So, at this point I'm feeling very cultured and well nourished, indeed! But, until my parents and I took a trip to Chicago, where we visited the new modern wing of the Art Institute of Chicago,

we spent time at the beach along Lake Michigan and simply hanging out.

and my very sweet, smart, and also very lively, funny and cute, niece, Skyler.

(Just look at that beach! How much do I wish I were still on vacation??!!)

Most evenings we just spent on the back patio chatting and, need I say it again?...you know, the beer and food with my parents. It's just such a wonderful place to be.

The summer also provided a nice weekend of visiting with my dear aunt, many cousins, their children and grandchildren. It was so special that so many made the effort to come visit us. (Photos covered nicely at manhartfamily.blogspot.com, as I'm sure you who care, know.)

Here's just one I like of me with my cousin and his beautiful daughter who I can't believe is going into her last year of college.

I also had the chance to visit with my best friend from Florida who brought her whole family up to Michigan during the time I was there.

Two days was too short, but...but...hmmm...just too short as it is with almost everything there is to say about summer, and vacation, and time spent with family and friends while living so far away. Sometimes short and sweet is good, sometimes just not. But it was a sweet summer.

Saturday in Kyoto

First Saturday off in a long while, so, we headed off early to Kyoto. We enjoyed a full day of celebrating Masashi's birthday. First stop, Kurama-Kibune, north Kyoto. Neither of us had ever been there before, so we were looking forward to a new adventure. And we certainly found one.

We decide to tackle the hike from Kurama to Kibune which took us up, up, up and up a beautiful temple-inhabited mountain side.

A worthy guardian stood at the temple entrance....we eyed each other up.

then headed up along lantern-lined walkways,

past beautiful, ancient, tall trees
huffing, puffing, and breaking for cool water

then down, down, down past root mazes.

By the bottom my calves were quivering and we were ready for a break.

Luckily, this is what we found along the river in Kibune.
Restaurants with decks built over the cool, flowing river bed. Mostly way too expensive for us, except the somen noodle place. So, we walked down the stairs and sat on the "waiting deck."

No one else seemed to be tempted to dip their toes in the cool water. Unthinkable to me, so after everyone except us got moved to the next waiting area - the tables on the upper deck, I scooted over to the edge and snuck in some feet dipping. To my sheer delight, though, a young couple joined us on the waiting deck and the guy immediately slung his legs over the side and partook in the joy of cool water flowing over tired feet. Ahhhh... Then I convinced Mashi to give it a try while he partook of another cool, flowing liquid.

This was Saturday relaxation at it's best!

Our turn came and we enjoyed the view before the noodles started flowing towards us in the bamboo troughs.
They kept coming and we kept slurping until the sign came - the last dollop of noodles - the red ones.
So, we walked along the river back to the train station in the mountains and headed back to downtown Kyoto.
Masashi and our friend Cat share the same birthday (Cat 10 years younger, Mashi 10 years...wiser?) We met for a nice dinner to celebrate their special day.
and later joined some more friends for more casual fare...
and a nice ending to a great day.
We even had cake and candles - 4 + 1 , for my dear 41 year old husband. Happy Birthday!

最近あるひとつのキッズクラスで
"Root Beer"というものがテキストの中ででてきました。
その時の子供たちは・・・

“Root Beer ってなんぞや？？？”
といった様子。

・・・そこで買ってきました！

ちなみに、ビールではなくコーラのような炭酸飲料。
アメリカなどでは子供たちがアイスクリームを入れたりして
飲む？食べる？ポピュラーな飲み物です。

“薬みたいな味！” とかいろいろとコメントがありました。

・・・確かにそう言われてみると薬みたいな味かも・・・

School's back on!

It's been a quiet week here at English Square with no kids classes. We had to cancel classes for the week because of the decision to close all the local schools due to the influenza scare. Kids were advised to not go outside and many teachers were out patrolling the streets, parks, etc.

So while I had some extra time on my hands and didn't feel quite so tired by the time Saturday rolled around, I sure did miss all those cute, smiling faces coming in the door saying, "Hello!"

We just got the official word that schools will reopen on Monday, so we're ready for students to come back next week and get back to our regular schedule. We'll be happy to see them and are sure glad this didn't last more than a week!

Swine Flu

今日は・・・１日
“インフルエンザ”
でしたね。

昨日からあやしい雰囲気になっていましたが、
朝起きてみるとやはり大阪府全公立学校は休校。

“私たちのスクールはどうしようか・・・”
まずはいろいろと確認しないとと言うことで何箇所かにTEL。
その間にも生徒さんの親御さんからもTELがあり、
考慮した結果、私たちも今日月曜日はクラスをキャンセルすることとなりました。
その後、午後になって正式に市のほうから今週いっぱいは全ての
私立学校で休校、また私立にも同等の対応を要請と発表あり。

散々悩んだ末に私たちも今週いっぱいはクラスをキャンセルすることとしました。
本当は通常通りクラスを行いたかったのですが、学校だけでなく
塾やその他の習い事などほぼ全ての機関・施設が休校あるいは休館。
その中で、私たちだけ迷惑や不安を与えることはしてはいけない
と思った末の苦肉の決断です。

それからはメール・電話で休校のお知らせをし、
また同時にいろいろな方からもお電話いただいたりと
最後の電話が終わったときは夜の９時をまわったところでした。

今日は何回“インフルエンザ”という言葉を発したでしょうか？

その後近所のスーパー“サボイ”さんに行きましたが、
本当に閑散としていて、また今日お話した中の親御さんが言われていたように
とりあえずの食事としてのパン類が本当にほとんど売り切れ状態でした。
なにかこう・・・近年にはない不思議というか異様な雰囲気が
町全体にあふれているような感覚です。

必要以上に敏感になる必要はないと思いますが、
やはり健康のことなので気になることでもありますし、
また特に小さいお子さんをもたれている親御さんは
そういった心配が大きくなりますよね。

でも何とかここ１週間で状況が改善され来週には
普通の生活に戻れることを願っています。
皆様もどうかお気をつけてまた来週には元気にお会いしましょう！

What We Found Up North

Just in the first day of our trip, we found some nice men along the quaint streets of Otaru...

this quite shy one giving free samples of ...

chocolate! (very good chocolate at that!)
this quite friendly and laid-back one grilling seafood along the streets...this fun and very outgoing one wanting to take a picture with me posed as a crab...and my man waiting with a local beer in hand.
There were nice canals to walk along...
and a cool micro-brewery to drop into.
We found three distinct micro-brews to try.

And since in our party, one of us is allergic to alcohol...
"Kampai!" looks like this...

We found sushi restaurants with the freshest selections...

(Mashi ordered these Hokkaido specialties - uni, ikura, and tobiko. Having not yet acquired a taste for sea urchin or fish eggs, he thoroughly enjoyed these delicacies all to himself.)

and our first day ended as a fun evening out.

On the rest of our short trip we found...

beautiful views of the sea...
which inspired dancing...
and silly posing.
We found serene rows of poplars at the Hokkaido University campus in Sapporo...
bright streets for nightlife...
yummy ramen...
a riverside and snow-capped mountains to enjoy during a morning jog...
and finally, a second chance to see spring...
this work of art which doubles as a slide...
and a nice bench to give our master trip planner a much deserved break.

The rest of our "Golden Week" vacation was, well, much more of the same. I'm afraid we find ourselves often going out for beers with friends, walking along riversides, and eating fish. 新年度もあっという間に１ヶ月が過ぎ、

早いものでゴールデンウィークまで過ぎてしまいました。

今年のゴールデンウィークはお天気もよく

行楽日和のお休みとなりましたね。

私たちはというと、

昨年と同じく親戚に会う為、北海道へ。

今回は小樽と札幌です。

神戸空港から新千歳へついた後は

そのままJRにて小樽のホテルに向かいましたが、

そのホテル横のショッピングモールにてお昼ご飯。

回転寿司です。。。

でも侮るなかれ、

北海道の回転寿司はすごい！です。

ネタ的には大阪の一流のお店か、いやいや、それ以上？

北海道人が大阪などに来て回転寿司を食べるとどう感じるのでしょう？

・・・とか真剣に考えてしまうほど。

ともあれお腹いっぱい大満足で今宵のホテルへ。

も来てもらったCatと彼女の旦那さんとの同伴旅行です。

この小樽運河沿いは駐車場まで雰囲気あります。
その後も街をぶらぶら、夕食を食べてホテルに戻り就寝。

次の日はレンタカーを借りて

札幌までの道中を楽しみました。

札幌に着きまずは北海道大学へ。

ここへは・・・何年ぶりかな？

おそらく最後に来たのは僕が小学生のとき。

学内にあるポプラ並木、懐かしい！

札幌駅ちかでとんでもなく巨大なキャンパス、

さすが

でっかいどー！はっかいどー！

札幌でホテルにチェックインのあとは、

ろばた焼きやさんにて晩御飯、

すすきの周辺から大通り公園などを歩き

ホテルへの帰り道にちょっと道草を。

とても雰囲気ある居酒屋？飲み屋さん？

翌日はこの旅の本題、

親戚のお家にお邪魔しました。

行く途中、大通り公園にて。

さくらー！

叔母さんたちのお家にてこの日はゆっくり。

夜ホテルに戻る前にはやっぱりラーメン♪

札幌でのホテルは川沿いにありとても気持ちいいところで、

朝からLisaはジョギング！

最終日も叔母さんなどに会ったりしながら

夕方の飛行機で関西空港へ。

空港でマスク姿の人の多さに（新型インフルエンザ？）

じゃっかん引きながらバスにてお家に帰りました。

今日は４月の８日、ほとんどの学校の新学期が始まっていますね！

桜もほぼ満開、心なしか大人までも

“ウキウキ・わくわく！(^O^)”

お外に出る頻度が増えますよね～

ここ数ヶ月の私たちは、

・保護者面談会

・新年度クラス・スケジュール調整

などなどでいっぱいいっぱいになってしまい、

ブログ更新が・・・(^_^;)

ちょっとこれからがんばりますっ。。。

早速ですが、今日はお昼前後にクラスがなかったこともあり
摂津峡にある桜公園へ。

少しだけでしたが、お天気もよく気持ちよい時間を過ごせました(＾＾)

私たちのスクールも今月から新年度が始まりました。

Our Very Japanesey Day

I know that by living in Japan, it should mean that every day is a very "Japanesey" day, but it doesn't seem so as much lately. The days go by and daily life is just, well, just daily life. But when it's cherry blossom season, the Japaneseness of Japan just comes blooming out all around. And today was just one of those days filled with Japanese things.

We started off at Tenjin Temple in Takatsuki, enjoying a small tea ceremony. Peaceful and beautiful under this blooming cherry.

Adding to the "Japaneseness" of my day, I learned how to use a new function on our camera that can take three shots and arrange them like this one. (Furthermore, my subject for this experiment was the temple cat, about which I'm sure I squealed, "So cute!" in proper Japanese fashion..."Kawaii!"
We then headed to Osaka to visit a small art gallery where my former pottery teacher was finishing a special exhibit. We got an invitation postcard in the mail last week:

I took pottery lessons from this kind and very talented potter for the 5 years I lived in Koga. What a pleasure to see them and their beautiful Japanese pottery! It made we want to get my hands on clay again, for sure! (This picture Masashi took while we were getting ready to pose for a picture - it catches the moment nicer than the posed version.)

Finally, we strolled around Osaka Castle and took in the sights, sounds and smells there.

The cherry trees were in full bloom, the vendors were out in full force, and there were several music groups to encounter from jazz to drum groups, guitarists to....

good ole' American 50's music just as we were walking out of the park. A crowd had gathered and as I approached I realized it was a group of dancers - leather jacket, tight jeans, pointy sleek shoes for the guy... poodle skirts and cardigans, etc. for the girls - twistin' the day away. It was a unique sight - a group of Japanese dancin' American, and this American being Japanese taking their picture.

We finished with a nice dinner for two in Umeda. A pretty good day in our lives in Japan. More to come as the weather warms up and we venture out and about.

Kyoko's Wedding Party

My host sister and her husband had their official wedding ceremony last year, a private ceremony at a church in Paris last month, and finally a party with friends last weekend which we happily attended.

I stayed with this host family when I studied Japanese in Shiga many years ago when their daughters were still students. They own and run a fantastic mediterranean restaurant in Hikone called Milk House. (http://www.milk-house.com) Now, the older daughter is expecting her first child, and the younger is a full-time chef in the family restaurant. The parents still work as hard as ever.

The party was at the family restaurant and my host sister reportedly did most of the food preparation herself before slipping into her beautiful wedding dress and being greeted by a room full of friends.

My host mother made their wedding cake and brought it in from the kitchen. Covered with a layer of beautiful fresh fruit...light and delicious!

She even prepared a special plate to present their portions on with extra homemade desserts on the side. Their friends, some from their high school sports clubs, made special presentations of gifts for them, adding to the festivities. We enjoyed hanging out with their young friends who, though we're years ahead, made us feel young. (The wine helped a little, too.) It was a beautiful and yummy evening indeed!

木曜日クラスのNちゃんからの手作りクッキー。

子供たちが作ってくれたと思うとなおさらうれしいです(＾＾)

こちらは大人クラスのTさんから頂きました。

本当にうれしかったです。

ついでに・・・

今僕たちが行っているジム（ZAVAS SPORT CLUB DELTA）

の帰り、チェックアウト？をした時に↓を手渡れました。

“今日は男性の方にチョコレートをプレゼントしています♡　”

とのこと。

さすが、明治製菓が経営しているジムです。

入口を出た後、Lisaを待つ為に少し待っていると、

出てくる男性陣のお顔は心なしか・・・　にやけていました。

あぁ、僕もこんな顔して出てきたんだなー(^^ゞ

でその後ですが、散髪にいつも行っている

Hair Timeに行くと、なんと帰りの際↓を頂きました。

最近はどこもすごいですねー！

もちろんLisaからも(＾＾)

We should glue what?

Just finished my Tuesday night private class with a high-school senior. He's very bright and getting better and better at English, of course, but in this evening's class we both just had to laugh at his little English blunders.

Our textbook provides an outline conversation for discussing plans and we worked together to make suggestions on what needs to get done. So, we picked two plans - one is to travel abroad, the other to try to be more eco-friendly.

First, travel abroad discussion...

Me: We should decide where we want to go.

Student: Yeah. That's important.

Me: So, where do you want to go?

Student: How about America?

Me: Great! But, America is a big place. Is there anything you really want to see?

Student: (long pause with pensive face) Angel.

Me: (trying hard to be funny....) Oh. You want to see an angel? I don't think America is a good choice then.

Student: (courtesy laugh) (thinking) ummm....

Me: (bright look on face of instant realization and sheer confidence) OH! You mean Los Angeles!!

Student: (laughing) No.... (thinking) Angel.....angel....(bright look on face) The Angel of Liberty!

Me: OH!!! Her!! Yeah...we can see her. New York City it is!

Next plan....let's be more eco-friendly

Me: We should try to remember to take our own bags when we go shopping.

Student: Yeah. That's a good idea.

Me: Do you have any ideas?

Student: We should ....(thinking) plans.....hmmm... g...g...glue

Me: glue?

Student: hmmm...glue ....glue (bright look on face) glue planets!

Me. ....??? glue planets...(gesturing and wondering and trying to get it)

AAAHHH! Grow plants!! (laughing)

Student: (confused face)/ Me: (explaining what glue planets means)

Both: (laughing)

Me: I think that even though you just passed the test and got your driver's license this week, you should NOT drive and only ride your bike, walk, use public transportation...

Student: We don't need that. (half smirking)

Me: (trying to remember how exciting it was to be able to drive) Yeah...I was just joking.

そう！今月はバレンタインズデー！

こんな感じにバレンタインです。

そろそろ女の子たちはチョコレートの話で盛り上がりぎみ！ですが・・・

今年は“逆チョコ”なる言葉も見かけることもありますが、
本来のバレンタインデーは特に女性→男性というわけではなく、
女性⇔男性。

しいて言えば
“愛の日♡”
とでもいうのでしょうか。

アメリカではこの日になると通りにお花屋さんが並び、
仕事帰りなどの男性が彼女・奥さんにそのお花を買って帰ります。

どうでしょう！日本の男性陣も、愛の告白♡・日ごろの感謝♡のしるしに
女性に何かちょっとしたものをプレゼントしてみては？！

Yet Another Birthday Celebration

Those of you who knew me well in my younger days would be shocked if I posted the pictures of what I sandwiched between salt and lemon last night at our friends annual infamously wild birthday party, so I'll spare you and my friends the photos, save these two. We had a fun night and hope our friend had a memorable birthday - or at least that he remembers it. ; D

Anyone want to come over and have a veggie party? These are gifts from one of our students' gardens. Two huge giant white radishes, equally giant Chinese cabbages, broccoli, green onions, carrots, and mizuna. It's "kimuchee nabe" nite, I think. YUM!

The poor woman wheeled this load of vegetables on a luggage cart in two plastic crates from her garden to our house. Must have been very slow going and very heavy over the not so great sidewalk. OTSUKARE SAMA DESU, Mrs. I! and ARIGATO GOZAIMASU!! (head bowing repeatedly as I write.)

Teaching kids the tricky "be" verb has never been so fun! Mickey, Winnie the Pooh, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Peter Rabbit, Babe and Snoopy helped a lot. They have no idea they're learning the "be" verb, of course. But they sure were good at it and enjoyed this activity.

This class was quite a while ago, but I just found these precious photos in the depths of our computer and wanted to share. They have the "It's.." and "It isn't..." down now, too. And the new year will bring "He's/He isn't" and "She's/She isn't" into the picture. Looking forward to more adventures with this always fun, enthusiastic, and attentive class!

(Hints for my students: "to have down" means to understand and be able to use, "to bring into the picture" means to have something introduced. Boy, English idioms are tricky, right?)

Great message, I think! Keep it Simple! Not only is this the slogan of one of my favorite children's music makers, Super Simple Songs, it is what our friend reminded me of with this e-mail message in which he responded to an invitation to our house this weekend.

I spend some of my working life trying to teach students to make full, complete, grammatically correct, yet concise sentences - well, I sort of do that. But, anyway, as you notice, I go on and on and babble and babble and don't always "Keep it Simple!"

So, thank you Iwao for your nice reminder that simple is not only best, it's more than enough. Message appreciated and thoroughly understandable!

Japanese New Year's Postcards

In many western countries it's tradition to send Christmas greetings to family and friends, whereas in Japan it's tradition to send greetings for each new year in the form of postcards. We are lucky to get some really nice postcards every year. I just wanted to share with my "readers" back home, if there are even enough to be labelled as such, some of my favorites. I selected all hand-made postcards from our students, two written in Japanese, two in English.

These are from elementary school age kids who attend our small school:

The big character written in the center stands for "cow" complete with cow print and all.

On the second one above, I cut the students names for sake of privacy, but it was so cute...

They are twin sisters who each signed the card. At first they wrote their names in English letters in traditional Japanese order with the family name first, then they erased them, I'm guessing on the advice of their always attentive and very caring mom, and wrote them the more accepted English way of given name first. These students are so thorough in everything they do. Even their dots on the exclamation points are cute.

The next is from a boy in my 3 year olds class...yes, THREE years old! He wrote each of our names out, under cute faces. I was so touched...and impressed. His mom wrote "Happy New Year" I'm sure.

Below is a card from a student in one of our adult classes. She hand writes / paints a limited number of postcards each year, out of which I'm fortunate to receive one. I think it's just beautiful and so delicately written.

The last one I chose is from friends of ours. For those of you who can't read Japanese, it says "Happy 'Nyu' Year" - 'nyu' in Japanese means milk and since it's the year of the cow, well, you get it. And I just loved the Obama reference! We're looking forward to the year ahead! We got so many cute cards, wish I could share them all, but wanted to say thanks to everyone.

And if you've read this far, I just had to share my favorite American style family Christmas card, of course including my favorite kids - my niece and nephew in Maine. The red nose is just the right touch!

You're such a great family - and I just loved your letter again this year, Emilie! You certainly have a gift for writing. Hope you don't mind me sharing.

We ended up in China town eating again before heading to the airport - only to eat again there and on the plane. I gotta get back to Japan and running again!

いつも最後の夜は寂しくなります。

この冬休みはタイとマレーシアに行きました！

今回は貯まっていたマイレージでの無料特典旅行です（V＾－°）

まずは関空から台北経由でタイのバンコクへ。

到着は夜の遅くだったのでその日は就寝。

次の日は早速チャオプラヤー川に。

ちっちゃい船にて観光です。

両側にいろんなお家が並んでいます。

船を降りた後に行ったワットプラケオ（王宮）

キンキラの建物が多く太陽光線が反射するのもあり

眩しいです！

Siam Square

BTS（スカイトレイン）サイアムスクエア駅。

Siam Paragonという駅前のショッピングモールみたいなところ。

とっても！賑やかです。毎日毎日ライヴをしていました。

こんなに活気のあるところは日本であるかな？？？

と思ってしまうぐらいバンコクはすごいですねー！

今回の旅行のメインといってもいいぐらいの目的は

タイ料理。

僕たち２人はタイ料理大好きで、

それこそほぼ毎日屋台でご飯を食べていましたが、

すばらしい！おいしい！！

しかも２人でビールを飲んで普通にお腹いっぱい食べて

日本円で約２，０００円弱ぐらい！

バンコクでのホテルは、

Thailand - Treats for the Eyes and Mouth

We found Bangkok shiny by day

and by night,

full of ancient colorful places like this ornate temple

and modern colorful places like this outdoor stage in front of the shopping mall.

There were rich homes along the river (in front of which Mashi took a nice photo of me in the sun)

and, not so rich ones (in front of which I took a not so good photo of Mashi in a shadow. Sorry hon'!)

There were crowded, noisy streets with pink - yes, bright pink and orange taxis

and quite tree-lined beaches with bright umbrellas to relax under.

There were friendly, smiling men who led us on our elephant ride

More smiling men...beautiful "ladymen" as they were called, wishing everyone Merry Christmas.

There were friendly, smiling women, one who made us a delicious glass noodle salad on our first day and recognized us when we went back for more the next. She was impressive - working day in and out along one of the busiest, noisiest streets in Bangkok, decked out in nice clothes, make-up, well-done hair, and a cart full of more ingredients than you couldn't imagine lugging around the busy, hot streets, serving tasty treats day after day with a smile.

Which brings me to our favorite part of Thailand...the spicy, yummy food...

Recycling and pollution control seems a bit lagging in Thailand, but there is no lack of green...

green curry, green salads, green leafy vegetables in oyster sauce, like this..our Christmas Eve dinner

...green herbs, limes, peppers on the sides of spicy dishes like this that accompanied our pad thai in the market place along the banks of the river near the national palace

...and our favorite, green papaya salad, which we ate every day, some days for both lunch AND dinner

...and, of course, we had plenty of Singha beer to wash down all that spicy, yumminess. It was a good Christmas in Thailand.

We got back to Japan yesterday, welcomed home by many Christmas cards and gifts in our mail box. Thank you, everyone!! We treated ourselves to a plate full of sashimi and sushi and a quiet night on our comfy sofa and Japanese TV.

The only sport Mashi likes to watch on TV, K-1 fighting, is on every New Year's Eve followed by coverage of the quiet toll of bells from the temples across Japan. We watched both and fell asleep right away, then woke up to enjoy the ball dropping in NYC. Bill and Hillary Clinton were there to push the button for the ball.

One day I hope to be in NYC on New Year's Eve...how about it Emilie - they have a run? Only 4 miles - we could do it no problem! Hopefully it won't be as cold as it looked there tonight. Anyway...Happy New Year everyone! Pictures from our trip coming soon.

The Christmas Parties Begin!

It was a nice, intimate party with just a small group. We ate the delicious food everyone brought, drank a few drinks, talked and laughed a lot. Everyone played a game and got to pick a present from under the tree. Even us adults get giddy over Christmas presents. It was festive and fun. Here are some photos.

Early Christmas Gifts

For the past three days it's felt like Christmas came early. One of the moms in my Thursday morning class gave me this bag full of handmade ornaments including frosted pine cones that she and her son had found. They're very cute ornaments that fit perfectly in our woody home...and that they're hand-painted makes them so much more special.
Another mom of one of our students is a florist and made this truly unique, arrangement for us. It has fresh greens and twigs, real princess apples, pine cones and little Christmas treasures on every corner. It's so creative and cute...I just love it! (Mashi wrote about it too, so see below for more pictures. For the last two hours, we've been on separate computers arguing over who gets to use which pictures in their blog entry. Haha!)

Friday evening brought the delivery man to our door with a box from two of my homes - one from the US and one from Shiga. The first was from my cousin in Chicago who is so kind and thoughtful as to send us gifts despite the high shipping costs. She sent her homemade snack mix that I love and can't stop eating once I start, my favorite chocolates with peanut butter inside, Mashi's favorite brand of Earl Grey tea, and a basket which comes from Ghana. It was purchased to supplement the income of the local farmers who make them. She also included a family photo from my Aunt, bless her heart, which she knows I will treasure. I so miss my family during the holidays.

The second box came from Shiga from my old supervisor at Koka Junior High School where I worked when I first arrived in Japan - gosh, how many years ago?? twelve? thirteen? I've lost count. If it hadn't been for the kindness and constant care of Oki-sensei in those first years in Japan, I'm sure I wouldn't still be living here. She still goes out of her way to send me gifts and a hand-written card, in perfect English, mind you, EVERY year. She reports in this year's card the happy news that her eighth grandchild will be born in January. I will go dig some photos out of my albums to pay proper tribute to this wonderful woman in a separate post once the holidays are over.

Finally, in this run of wonderful gifts that came my way, I got a very cute coffee mug from one of my adult students at our annual Christmas party on Saturday night. We had a nice, intimate gathering with just a few of our students who could manage to come during this busy time of year. We always play a simple game and do a present exchange. For the past two years I've been lucky to receive the present that our student Yuko brought. Last year I got a really cute frog-shaped tape dispenser, this year a mug from "The Story of Moominvalley." She has fun taste! I enjoyed my morning cup of coffee with Moomin this morning. Thanks to our students and moms for making our Christmas holiday so warm despite my being so far from home, and for my cousin who always makes an effort to stay in touch and keep our small family close. My life is so blessed with special people. Tomorrow we start the Christmas parties for our kindergartners and elementary students....the cookie dough is made and in the fridge, cookie cutters washed, Christmas games and Twister set-up and ready to go! Bring on the kids! Ho! Ho! Ho!

Yummy Autumn Food with Friends

Some friends joined me for an all-girls weekend eating extravaganza. We are all married with no kids, two of us from the US with Japanese husbands, two Japanese with husbands from the US/Canada, all English teachers/small school owners. We all love to eat and talk and relax and had a great weekend together. Thanks girls!

Our first stop...grilled scallops and oysters just after getting off the train.

After a bit..a very little bit of hiking, we enjoyed a full-course seafood dinner and healthy Japanese breakfast at the hotel..all served in our room in between trips to the hot springs.

Finally, we stopped for special Japanese sweets on our way to the beautiful, serene, (very crowded and a bit rainy) World Heritage Site, Ise Shrine.

This trip was made possile by my master trip-planner, Mashi. He's a pro at organizing vacations and spent a lot of time on this one for us wives...Thanks, hon!

アメリカでは毎年１１月の第４木曜日は、
サンクスギビングデー（感謝祭・収穫祭）です。

この日は祝日になり家族が集まり
七面鳥などを食べてお祝いをするお祭りです。

今年のLisaの両親はSam（Lisaの双子の弟）を訪ね
メイン州にある彼のお家に行っています。

ちょうどむこうが感謝祭当日夜ぐらいに
電話をしました。

いつも使っているSkype。

一昔前までは、
お互いの顔を見ながらの国際電話なんて考えられなかったですし
またあったとしてもすごーく！高かったでしょうね。

Off I go into the blogging world...again...

Ok.....so....ah...um.....I already have writers block. Just kidding! I have been wanting to start this blog so many times, on so many occasions, after being inspired by so many thoughts and blog ideas, so it's finally time to get this launched. I tried a few year ago on our original blog page, but realized none of my family or friends had been reading and gave up. This time, I'll use this site since it can be accessed in English...sorry about the confusing Japanese blog home on our first try.

I'll start with a bit of a warning...I am overly crazy about my little niece Skyler, so if you see me stealing photos from her mom Emilie's amazing blog (manhartfamily.blogspot.com) and putting them here shamelessly, I apologize. I can see her cute little face peering out from behind my blog screen on my screensaver as I write. She has no idea how much she's loved from half way around the world.

I have to make a commitment to this thing this time. I'll try my best even though Mashi seems better at getting posts out there. I wish my family could read Japanese and understand the simple joy that are Mashi's posts...but alas....you can at least see the photos he choses and now I'll try to write more often.
